Why your Google Ads aren't booking jobs (and it isn't the budget)
We audit Google Ads accounts for HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and roofing companies almost every week. The pattern is always the same: spend is fine, clicks are coming in, calendar is empty. Here's where it actually breaks.
1. Broad match is doing exactly what it's designed to do
Broad match keywords match anything Google thinks is related. Your 'AC repair' campaign is paying for 'how to repair AC yourself' clicks. Switch to phrase match minimum, exact match where intent is highest, and watch your cost-per-job halve.
2. Your landing page is your homepage
The homepage tells visitors who you are. A landing page tells them to call right now. Different jobs, different conversion rates. If your ad sends to a generic site, you're losing 60–80% of clicks the form never sees.
3. Your phone goes to voicemail half the time
Google Ads sends real-time leads. If they hit voicemail, they call the next listing. Track your missed-call rate for a week. If it's above 10%, fix that before you touch the ad account.
4. You're bidding on the wrong service
High volume isn't high margin. A $40 drain cleaning ad eats the same budget as a $4,000 water heater install. Skew your bids toward the work that actually pays the bills.
5. Local Service Ads aren't running
If you're licensed, insured, and reviewed, LSAs are the cheapest qualified leads on Google. Most accounts we audit either don't have them turned on or have them paused because of one dispute. Re-enable, dispute aggressively, and let them run.
6. Nobody's looking at the data on Monday morning
Google Ads is not 'set and forget'. The accounts that win get reviewed weekly — pause losers, double down on winners. If nobody owns that review, the account drifts back to mediocre within a month.
Fix order
- Set up call tracking and review missed-call rate.
- Tighten match types and negative keywords.
- Build one dedicated landing page per service.
- Re-enable LSAs and dispute disqualified leads weekly.
- Schedule a weekly 30-minute account review — non-negotiable.
